Every hostel has beds and bathrooms but The Pickled Frog has something rarer: soul. In the kitchen, I met a girl who shared her pasta with me just because I looked hungry. In the lounge, I met a group who invited me to explore Hobart with them even though we’d met only ten minutes earlier. And somewhere between late-night chats, shared playlists, and cheap beers at the bar, I realised I wasn’t just passing through Hobart… I was collecting moments I’d remember forever. Some places you stay at. Some places stay with you. The Pickled Frog is definitely is second.

This hostel is great. A lot of people stay for long periods of time, so even if you're just there for a few days (like me) you pick up on the sense of community and comradery that they keep going. And the staff are just as social and involved as the guests, all intermingling and hanging out. They have events, but there's also a lot of chill down time, and plenty of space to find a quiet corner to do your own thing. Huge kitchen, paid laundry, nice TV, book nook, fireplaces, couches, chairs, and booths, pool table, info about the area, etc. And it's in a great location walkable to much of Hobart. Accessibility note - like most hostels, the main building is not accessible. However, there is a back building with accessible dorm rooms, and they are happy to help make it work, though if you can't do any steps at all you couldn't access the kitchen, laundry, lounge rooms, etc. Still could be a good cheap stay if you just need a bed for a few nights.

I’ve stayed in dozens of hostels, but very few left a mark on me like this one. Maybe it was the warmth of the old building. Maybe it was the way the staff remembered my name every morning. Maybe it was the feeling of safety when you sink into a couch surrounded by travellers who all carry their own stories and scars. One night, we all sat in the common room sharing travel tales, and someone said, “You know, this place feels like the pause button in life, the safe spot before the next chapter.” I felt that deeply. If you’re looking for more than a bed, if you’re looking for connection, comfort, and the kind of atmosphere that wraps around you like a cozy blanket, this is the place.

Thank you pickled frog, you did not dissapoint! Everyone here is lovely, you will make great connections and feel at home. Everynight people are spending time together, from watching movies/tv in the cozy living room to playing board games and pool. Very lively and social, but not loud and abnoxious in any way. The Hostel is also only minutes walk from the CBD and a fantastic rivulet walk filled with platypus. Thank you to the amazing staff. If I’m ever in Hobart again I know where I will stay.

The Pickled Frog is by far the best hostel I've been to in Aus. The staff is so kind and funny. There are multiple events per week and you actually get to meet people. The common room is very inviting and there are loads of things to do. The location is great because it's close to the CBD but far enough away that it's not too busy. The facilities could be better but that's to be expected in a hostel with loads of people.

My 3 day stay turned into 3 weeks when my adventure plans changed mid trip. I love having a private room but having the hostel vibe to meet people and have activities. Kel was great at lining up soccer games bi-weekly and creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Spikes trivia was top notch. And karaoke lined up with my last night there which was a fitting end to the trip. The activities were fun and got people involved. It felt like being back in a college dorm but with the maturity of well traveled neighbors. The kitchen was small and storage was tight when it was full, but the atmosphere was top notch. Would absolutely go back any time I’m in Tasmania.

Kell, a charismatic Brit, was incredible. He made my entire stay memorable. Whenever I needed extra sheets, or to borrow his phone to make a call, he was there! This was the single best hostel experience I have ever had, all thanks to this amazing staff member. Please give him a raise. 11/10
